How Long Do Edibles Take to Kick In? Onset by Format, Timing Tips, and the NY Label Rule

Most cannabis edibles take 30 to 90 minutes to kick in, peak around two to three hours after eating, and last four to eight hours. Gummies and chocolates are slowest because THC passes through your stomach and liver first; THC drinks and sublingual products can be felt in 15 to 30 minutes. Wait at least two hours before taking more.

“How long do edibles take to kick in?” is the question our budtenders hear more than any other about gummies, and the answer depends on the format, what you ate it with, and your own body. This guide lays out the typical onset window for each type of edible sold at a licensed New York dispensary, the factors that speed it up or slow it down, what to do when nothing seems to be happening, and what the timing warning on every New York edible label actually means. If you are still deciding on a starting amount, read it alongside our guide to what 5 mg of THC feels like.

Why do edibles take longer to kick in than smoking or vaping?

Edibles take longer because the THC has to be digested before it reaches your bloodstream. When you inhale cannabis, THC moves from your lungs into your blood within minutes. When you swallow a gummy, the THC travels through your stomach and small intestine and then passes through the liver, which converts a portion of it into a related compound called 11-hydroxy-THC before it circulates. That digestive detour is the whole reason for the delay, and it is also why an edible tends to feel stronger and last longer than the same milligram amount inhaled.

Two practical consequences follow. First, the onset window is wide: anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours is normal for a standard gummy or chocolate. Second, because the effects build slowly, the most common mistake with edibles is deciding “it’s not working” at the 45-minute mark and eating a second serving. The first one then arrives on top of the second.

How long do edibles take to kick in by type?

Onset depends mostly on how the THC gets into your body: through the gut (slowest), through the lining of the mouth (faster), or from a water-soluble emulsion in a beverage (fastest of the edible formats). The ranges below are typical for adult-use products sold in New York; your own timing can land outside them.

Comparison card showing typical onset, peak and duration for cannabis edible formats sold in New York: gummies and chocolates 30 to 90 minutes to kick in, baked goods and capsules 45 minutes to two hours, THC drinks 15 to 30 minutes, tinctures and sublingual products 15 to 45 minutes, with peaks at two to three hours and total duration of four to eight hours
Typical onset, peak and duration by edible format. Individual results vary.
Edible type Typical time to kick in Peak Total duration Why
Gummies, chews, mints (swallowed) 30–90 minutes 2–3 hours 4–8 hours Digested in the gut and processed by the liver
Chocolates and baked goods 45 minutes–2 hours 2–3 hours 4–8 hours Fat and sugar slow stomach emptying slightly
Capsules and softgels 45 minutes–2 hours 2–3 hours 4–8 hours Capsule has to dissolve before digestion starts
THC drinks and drink powders 15–30 minutes 1–2 hours 2–4 hours Water-soluble (nano-emulsified) THC absorbs faster and clears sooner
Tinctures, lozenges, strips (held under the tongue) 15–45 minutes 1–2 hours 3–5 hours Part of the THC absorbs through the mouth lining and skips the first pass through the liver

Gummies and chocolates

Gummies are the benchmark format. A standard 5 mg or 10 mg gummy that you chew and swallow usually kicks in between 30 and 90 minutes, with a noticeable build rather than a sudden switch. Chocolates and baked goods behave the same way but often sit at the later end of the window because the fat in the product slows digestion. Our gummy storage guide covers how to keep the rest of the package fresh.

THC drinks

Cannabis beverages are the fastest-acting edible on the menu. Most New York drinks use water-soluble THC, usually made with a nano-emulsification process that breaks the oil into tiny droplets so it absorbs through the digestive tract far more quickly. Many people feel a 2.5 mg or 5 mg drink within 15 to 30 minutes, and the effects typically fade sooner than a gummy’s. Our THC drinks guide goes deeper on dosing by the can.

Tinctures and sublingual products

Tinctures, dissolvable strips and lozenges are designed to be held under the tongue or against the cheek. Some of the THC absorbs through the thin tissue there and enters the bloodstream directly, so onset is often 15 to 45 minutes. Hold the product in place for 60 to 90 seconds before swallowing to get the faster onset the format is built for.

What makes an edible kick in faster or slower?

Five variables explain most of the difference between “I felt it in 40 minutes” and “nothing for two hours.”

  1. What is in your stomach. On an empty stomach an edible usually kicks in faster and feels more abrupt. After a full meal, especially a fatty one, onset is slower and the build is smoother. For a first experience, a light snack beforehand is the middle ground most budtenders suggest.
  2. The format. As the table above shows, drinks and sublinguals act in a fraction of the time a brownie needs. Comparing a gummy to a seltzer is comparing two different delivery routes.
  3. Dose. A larger serving does not reach you much sooner, but a larger serving is easier to notice when it does arrive.
  4. Your metabolism and body. Digestive speed, body composition and individual liver enzyme activity all vary from person to person, which is why two people who split one 10 mg gummy can report very different timelines.
  5. Tolerance. Regular consumers often report a shorter and milder onset; occasional consumers tend to feel the same serving later and more strongly.

How long do edibles last once they kick in?

A typical gummy or chocolate lasts four to eight hours from the first noticeable effect, with the strongest stretch around two to three hours after eating. Drinks and sublinguals run shorter, roughly two to five hours. Plan ahead: clear the evening, arrange a ride if you are going anywhere, and do not drive or operate machinery until the effects have fully worn off. New York treats driving while impaired by cannabis the same way it treats alcohol; our 2026 New York cannabis law guide covers the rules.

What should you do if your edible hasn’t kicked in?

Wait. That is the entire strategy, and it is harder than it sounds. If you have eaten a standard gummy and feel nothing after 45 minutes, you are still well inside the normal window. Here is the sequence our team recommends:

Step card titled If your edible hasn't kicked in yet, with four steps: wait at least two hours before considering more, eat a light snack if your stomach is empty, do not stack a second serving on the first, and next time start with a smaller serving or a faster format such as a THC drink; footer notes the New York label warning that effects may be delayed by four or more hours
The two-hour rule, and what to change next time.
  1. Give it at least two hours. Edibles are often felt within 90 minutes, but two hours is the point at which a standard serving has almost always arrived. New York’s required label warning goes further and states that effects “may be delayed by 4 or more hours,” so a slow start is expected, not a defect.
  2. Have a light snack if your stomach is empty. A little food can help digestion along without blunting the effects much.
  3. Do not take a second serving to “catch up.” Stacking servings is the single most common way people end up with a much stronger evening than they planned. If the first serving was simply too small for you, note it and adjust next time.
  4. Next time, change one thing. Either step up by a small amount (for example, 2.5 mg to 5 mg) or switch to a faster format such as a THC drink.

If you did take more than you meant to, the effects are temporary and fade on their own over a few hours. Stay somewhere comfortable, drink water, and don’t drive. Every New York edible label also prints the Poison Center contact for anyone who needs it.

What does the New York label tell you about timing?

Every adult-use edible sold by a licensed New York dispensary carries a label governed by the Office of Cannabis Management’s packaging and labeling rules (9 NYCRR Part 128). Three parts of that label matter for timing:

  • Milligrams per serving. New York caps adult-use edibles at 10 mg of total THC per serving, and the label must state the mg per serving, the number of servings in the package and the recommended serving size. If a gummy is marked as two servings, half of it is one serving.
  • The delayed-effects warning. Orally ingested products must carry the statement “Warning: Effects of this product may be delayed by 4 or more hours.” It is a conservative figure by design, and it is the state’s way of saying the same thing we do: wait before you take more.
  • The COA code. The scannable certificate of analysis shows the tested THC content for the lot, so you know a “5 mg” gummy was measured as 5 mg rather than guessed. Unlicensed products without a COA can be far off their stated dose, which makes timing unpredictable.

Our walkthrough on how to read a New York cannabis label shows exactly where each of these appears on the package.

How to plan your first edible so the timing works for you

  1. Pick a low serving. 2.5 mg to 5 mg of THC is the usual starting point for someone new to edibles. Our guide to finding the right THC dose walks through how to step up from there.
  2. Choose the format for the evening you want. A drink if you want to feel it soon and be done in a couple of hours; a gummy if you want a slow build that lasts.
  3. Eat something light first. Not a heavy meal, not an empty stomach.
  4. Start the clock and leave it alone for two hours. Put the rest of the package away so the second serving is not sitting in front of you.
  5. Keep the evening free. No driving, no obligations, a ride home arranged if you are out.
  6. Write down what happened: format, milligrams, what you ate, when you felt it and how long it lasted. After a few tries you will know your own onset window.

Frequently asked questions

Do edibles kick in faster on an empty stomach?

Usually, yes. With nothing else to digest, a gummy or chocolate tends to be felt sooner and more abruptly. After a full or fatty meal, onset is slower and the build is smoother. A light snack beforehand is the middle ground most budtenders suggest for a first try.

How long do THC drinks take to kick in?

Most cannabis beverages sold in New York use water-soluble (nano-emulsified) THC and are felt within about 15 to 30 minutes, which is much faster than a gummy. They also tend to wear off sooner, often within two to four hours.

Why haven't I felt my edible after an hour?

An hour is still inside the normal window. Standard gummies and chocolates commonly take 30 to 90 minutes, and two hours is not unusual, especially after a meal. New York's required label warning states that effects may be delayed by four or more hours. Wait before deciding it did not work.

Can I take another edible if the first one isn't working?

Not within the first two hours. Taking a second serving before the first has arrived is the most common way people end up with a far stronger experience than they planned. If a serving turns out to be too small for you, note it and step up by a small amount next time instead.

How long does a 10 mg edible last?

A swallowed 10 mg gummy or chocolate typically lasts four to eight hours from the first noticeable effect, with the strongest stretch around two to three hours after eating. A 10 mg drink usually runs shorter. Do not drive until the effects have fully worn off.

Do gummies kick in faster than chocolate?

Slightly, in many cases. Both are digested the same way, but the fat in chocolate and baked goods can slow stomach emptying, so those formats often land toward the later end of the 30-minute to two-hour window. The difference is smaller than the difference between a gummy and a THC drink.

Does holding an edible in your mouth make it work faster?

Only for products designed for it. Tinctures, dissolvable strips and lozenges held under the tongue for 60 to 90 seconds absorb partly through the mouth lining and are often felt in 15 to 45 minutes. Chewing a regular gummy longer makes little difference because it is formulated to be swallowed and digested.

How much THC is in one New York edible serving?

New York caps adult-use edibles at 10 mg of total THC per serving. The label must list the milligrams per serving, the number of servings per package and the recommended serving size, and the package carries a scannable COA so you can check the tested potency for that lot.
