Jesus Fontanez spent 17 years in hospital management before opening Cannabis Realm of New York with his longtime friend Eyasser Noboa. The first store opened on Central Avenue in White Plains in April 2024, after a state injunction held up the buildout for months. He also co-owns Pink Princess Nails in Scarsdale.
Two careers in service businesses shaped how he approaches cannabis retail: the product matters, but what people actually remember is how they were treated on the way in and on the way out. That is the standard he holds the floor staff to, and it is why Cannabis Realm hires for temperament first.
The buying philosophy comes down to one test. “We carry everything for everybody,” he says. “If we were shopping, what would we want?”
That range is deliberate, and it reflects something that surprised him about the legal market: the customer base does not sort neatly by age. “It’s interesting because you’ll have a 30-year-old buying the same thing as a 60-year-old,” he told The Other Magazine.
Cannabis Realm was awarded a Conditional Adult-Use Retail Dispensary (CAURD) licence and then waited, through litigation and injunctions, to be allowed to open. Asked what the process took, Fontanez is blunt: “It’s like balancing patience and action, and patience and, honestly, patience.”
He expected resistance from the neighbourhood and did not get it. “I thought it would be a lot more pushback,” he said. “Even the customers, it’s weird to me, because when you shop, people don’t thank you for shopping.”
