What is Live Resin?

Quick answer: Live resin is a cannabis concentrate made from plants that are frozen right after harvest instead of being dried and cured, then extracted with a hydrocarbon solvent such as butane. Skipping the drying step keeps more of the strain’s own terpenes, so live resin tastes and smells closer to the living plant. It is sold as vape carts, disposables, dabs (sauce, sugar, badder) and gummies, and every licensed New York product is lab-tested before it reaches the shelf.

“Live resin” is one of the most common labels in our vape case and at our concentrate counter, and one of the most misunderstood. This guide explains what the word “live” actually means, how live resin is made, how strong it is, how it compares with distillate and live rosin, and how to check that what you are buying is the real thing. It is written by our editorial team and reviewed by a co-owner, based on what our budtenders hear every day at our Rockland, White Plains and Queens stores.

What is live resin?

Live resin is a solvent-based cannabis concentrate made from fresh-frozen plant material. Most concentrates start with flower that has been dried and cured for days or weeks, and during that time a share of the plant’s most volatile terpenes evaporates. Live resin skips drying entirely: the plant is frozen within hours of harvest and extracted while it is still frozen.

The word “live” means the same thing on any concentrate label: fresh-frozen input. It does not tell you whether a solvent was used. Live resin is a hydrocarbon extract; its solventless counterpart is live rosin, which we compare side by side in Live Rosin vs. Live Resin.

How is live resin made?

  1. Harvest and freeze. Plants are cut at peak maturity and frozen immediately, before any drying or curing, so the terpenes stay locked in the trichomes.
  2. Closed-loop extraction. The frozen material is washed with a cold hydrocarbon solvent, usually butane, propane or a blend of the two, which dissolves the cannabinoids and terpenes out of the plant.
  3. Vacuum purge. The solvent is removed under vacuum at low temperature. Keeping the heat low protects the terpenes that a hotter process would burn off.
  4. Lab testing. In New York every batch is tested by an OCM-permitted laboratory, including a residual-solvent panel. The OCM Cannabis Testing Limits cap total butanes, propane and ethanol at 5,000 ppm each, so live resin sold at a licensed store has passed those limits.

How the extract is stirred, cooled and separated after purging decides its final texture, which is why the same live resin can be sold as sauce, sugar or badder.

Why terpenes are the point of live resin

Terpenes are the aromatic compounds that make one strain smell like citrus and another like pine, fuel or fruit. They are fragile, and drying and curing is where many of them are lost. Because live resin is extracted before the plant dries, it carries a fuller version of the strain’s original aroma. Terpenes you will often see on a live resin COA:

  • Myrcene – earthy, musky, ripe-mango notes.
  • Limonene – bright citrus.
  • Pinene – pine needles and fresh herbs.
  • Linalool – floral, lavender-like.
  • Caryophyllene – black pepper and spice.

You will also hear that terpenes change the effect through the “entourage effect,” the idea that cannabinoids and terpenes work together. It is a popular hypothesis rather than settled science, so treat it as one reason to try a strain, not a promise. Our guide to what terpenes are goes deeper, and the terpene panel on a product’s COA is the fastest way to see what is actually in it.

Live resin textures: sauce, sugar, badder and diamonds

  • Sauce – a runny, terpene-heavy liquid, often with THCA crystals suspended in it.
  • Sugar – grainy, wet-looking crystals that resemble damp sugar.
  • Badder (budder) – whipped to a cake-frosting texture that is easy to scoop.
  • Diamonds – large THCA crystals separated out of a terpene sauce, usually the highest THC number on the menu.

Texture is mostly about handling and preference rather than quality. For wax, shatter, crumble, hash and rosin, see Diamonds, Wax, Rosin, Sugar: What’s the Difference?

Live resin formats on a New York menu

  • Vape cartridges and disposables. The most popular way to buy live resin. Carts use standard 510-thread batteries; disposables have the battery built in.
  • Dabs. Sauce, sugar and badder in jars, used with a dab rig or an electronic rig.
  • Gummies and edibles. Live resin gummies are made with live resin instead of distillate, so they keep more of the strain’s flavor.
  • Infused pre-rolls. Flower infused or coated with live resin for a stronger joint.

On our menus, MFNY, Moon Dust and Hashtag Honey are known for live resin vapes and dabs. Stock changes weekly and varies by store.

How strong is live resin?

Live resin carts and dabs on New York menus commonly list somewhere around 60% to 90% total THC, depending on the texture and the brand. Two comparisons explain where it sits:

  • Usually lower than distillate, because part of the oil by weight is terpenes and minor cannabinoids rather than THC.
  • Usually higher than live rosin, because a solvent pulls cannabinoids out of the plant more efficiently than an ice-water wash.

The THC number tells you how much THC is in the product, not how it tastes or feels. Compare products in the same format, and read the total THC on the package; our guide to reading a New York cannabis label shows where to find it. Concentrates are far stronger than flower, so if you are new to them, start with a small amount and wait before having more.

Live resin vs. distillate, live rosin and cured resin

Concentrate Starting material Solvent Best for
Live resin Fresh-frozen plant Hydrocarbon, purged Strain-true flavor at a mid-range price
Distillate Dried plant or crude extract, refined Yes, then distilled THC per dollar and consistency
Live rosin Fresh-frozen plant, washed into hash None Solventless and plant-true; highest price
Cured resin Dried, cured flower Hydrocarbon, purged More flavor than distillate for less than live resin

How to use live resin

  • In a cart or disposable. Live resin oil is thicker than distillate, so run your battery at a lower voltage and give it a short preheat if the cart has been in the cold. If it pulls hard, lower the voltage before assuming the cart is clogged.
  • As a dab. Lower-temperature dabs keep more of the flavor; very hot dabs burn off the terpenes you paid for.
  • On flower. A small amount on top of a bowl or inside a joint adds flavor and strength. Go easy; it adds up quickly.

Not sure which format fits you? Ask a budtender to show you the same strain as a cart and as a dab.

How to store live resin

  • Keep jars sealed in an airtight glass or silicone container, away from light and heat.
  • For longer storage, keep sauce and badder in the refrigerator, and let the jar reach room temperature before opening so moisture does not condense inside.
  • Store carts upright and never leave them in a hot car.
  • Keep all cannabis locked away from children and pets.

How to tell you are buying real, tested live resin

A “live resin” claim on an untested product sold at an unlicensed shop means nothing; there is no lab report behind it. At a licensed New York dispensary, every product carries a label with the product name, lot number, total THC, the New York universal symbol and a QR code that links to its certificate of analysis (COA). Scan it and check two things: the residual-solvent results passed, and the terpene panel shows a meaningful terpene percentage. Our guides to reading a NY cannabis label and finding a licensed dispensary walk through both.

Frequently asked questions

What is live resin?

A cannabis concentrate made from plants that are frozen immediately after harvest instead of being dried and cured, then extracted with a hydrocarbon solvent such as butane. Extracting from fresh-frozen material preserves more of the plant’s original terpenes, which is why live resin tastes closer to the living plant.

What does “live” mean on a concentrate label?

It means the plant was frozen right after harvest instead of being dried and cured. It does not tell you whether a solvent was used: live resin is solvent-extracted, while live rosin is solventless.

How is live resin different from distillate?

Distillate is refined until it is almost pure THC, then re-flavored with added terpenes. Live resin keeps the strain’s own terpene profile from the start, so the aroma and flavor come from the plant rather than from added flavoring.

Is live resin stronger than other concentrates?

It sits in the middle. Live resin usually lists lower total THC than distillate, because terpenes take up part of the oil, and usually higher than live rosin, because solvent extraction is more efficient than an ice-water wash. Read the total THC on the actual label to compare.

What forms does live resin come in?

Vape cartridges and disposables, jarred dabs such as sauce, sugar, badder and diamonds, live resin gummies, and infused pre-rolls.

Is live resin lab tested in New York?

Yes. Every adult-use product sold at a licensed New York dispensary is tested by an OCM-permitted lab for potency, residual solvents, pesticides, heavy metals and microbials, with the certificate of analysis linked to the QR code on the package.

How should you store live resin?

In an airtight glass or silicone container, away from light and heat. For longer storage keep jars in the refrigerator and let them reach room temperature before opening. Keep carts upright and out of hot cars.

Where can I buy live resin near me in Rockland, Westchester or Queens?

Cannabis Realm of NY carries live resin carts, disposables, dabs and gummies at its licensed stores in Spring Valley (Rockland), White Plains and Jamaica (Queens), with same-day delivery, pickup and curbside. You must be 21+ with a valid ID.
