What Is Green Wednesday? The Biggest Cannabis Shopping Day Before Thanksgiving, and How to Order Ahead in NY

Green Wednesday is the day before Thanksgiving, Wednesday, November 25 in 2026, and one of the two busiest cannabis shopping days of the year, trailing only 4/20 in most industry counts. In New York, licensed dispensaries such as Cannabis Realm of NY run normal delivery, pickup, and curbside service that day; ordering earlier in the week beats the rush.

If Black Friday belongs to electronics and Cyber Monday to everything else, Green Wednesday belongs to the dispensary. The name has stuck because the data keeps backing it up: for several years running, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving has produced the biggest single-day jump in legal cannabis sales outside of April 20. This guide explains where the day came from, why it is so busy, what it looks like in New York’s licensed market, and how to order from Rockland, White Plains, or Queens without standing in a line.

Where did Green Wednesday come from?

Green Wednesday is an industry nickname, not an official holiday. It emerged in the first legal adult-use states (Colorado and Washington led the way after 2014) once dispensaries noticed that the eve of Thanksgiving outsold almost every other day on the calendar. Retailers began planning promotions around it, trade press started tracking it, and by the early 2020s analytics firms were publishing year-over-year comparisons the way they do for Black Friday.

The numbers explain the staying power. Cannabis analytics firm Headset found that Green Wednesday sales ran 33% above a typical Wednesday in 2021, 48% in 2022, and 52% in 2023. In Massachusetts, the state’s Cannabis Control Commission reported that Green Wednesday 2022 adult-use sales ran about 85% above an ordinary Wednesday and made up nearly a quarter of that week’s total. Industry groups routinely describe the day as the second-largest cannabis shopping day after 4/20.

Why is the day before Thanksgiving so busy for dispensaries?

Green Wednesday is busy because it is the last convenient shopping window before a four-day stretch when most people are traveling, hosting, or at someone else’s table. Several things stack up on the same afternoon:

  • Travel day. Thanksgiving Eve is one of the heaviest travel days of the year. People shop near home before they leave, or stop in once they arrive in town for the weekend.
  • Hosting and guests. Adults of age who are hosting pick up pre-rolls or edibles to share, the same way they would pick up wine. Our Thanksgiving in New York guide covers the etiquette side.
  • The “cousin walk.” The post-dinner stroll that relatives take together has become a social-media shorthand for the holiday, and the Cannabis Media Council estimates that 10% to 20% of Green Wednesday customers are first-time dispensary shoppers.
  • Thanksgiving Day itself is quiet. Headset’s data shows sales on Thanksgiving Thursday fall as much as 70% below a normal Thursday, and Black Friday is flat to slightly down. Whatever people want for the long weekend, they buy on Wednesday.

There is also a simple deal-hunting reflex at work. Dispensaries in mature markets discount more heavily during Thanksgiving week than at almost any other time, so shoppers who already planned to buy wait for Wednesday.

Is Green Wednesday a thing in New York?

Yes. New York legalized adult-use cannabis in March 2021 and the licensed retail market has been open since late 2022, so this is the state’s fourth Thanksgiving with legal dispensaries. The rules that shape what a New York Green Wednesday looks like are set by the Office of Cannabis Management (OCM):

  • Only OCM-licensed dispensaries can sell adult-use cannabis. Every product is lab-tested and labeled under state rules. Unlicensed smoke shops are not part of Green Wednesday in any legal sense.
  • You must be 21 or older with a valid government-issued photo ID, in store and at the door for delivery. Our guide to what ID you need for cannabis delivery in New York walks through what counts.
  • OCM’s December 2025 update to Parts 128 and 129 authorized rewards and loyalty programs and clarified how licensed retailers may run promotions and discounts. Giving away cannabis for free remains prohibited, and promotions must be aimed at adults 21 and over.

In practice that means New York dispensaries can now run real Thanksgiving-week specials and reward members, which they could not do during the market’s first two holiday seasons. At Cannabis Realm of NY, current offers always live on the deals page and apply automatically on each store’s menu; Realm Rewards members earn points on every order, including delivery.

What sells most on Green Wednesday?

Shareable, portable formats win the holiday. In Headset’s 2023 Green Wednesday breakdown, edibles grew 10.5% and beverages 3% against the day’s overall pattern, while concentrates slipped 11%. That tracks with how people use the long weekend: products that travel well, do not require hardware, and can be portioned for a group.

Format Why it fits Thanksgiving week Ordering note
Gummies and other edibles Portioned, discreet, easy to share with other adults Read the per-piece milligrams on the label; see how long edibles take to kick in
THC beverages Sits in the cooler next to the seltzer; a non-alcohol option for guests Cans and bottles are heavier, so a delivery or curbside order saves the carry
Pre-rolls and multipacks No grinder or papers needed; a pack covers a weekend of visits Compare value in our pre-rolls vs. flower guide
Vape carts and disposables Pocketable for the “cousin walk” Charge the battery before Wednesday; carts sell out fastest in popular strains
Flower The classic session for the house Popular eighths run short by Wednesday evening; order Monday or Tuesday

How do you order ahead for Green Wednesday in New York?

Cannabis Realm of NY offers four ways to get an order during Thanksgiving week, and three of them let you skip the counter entirely:

  1. Same-day delivery. Enter your ZIP on the delivery page, shop the menu for the store that serves you, and prepay with AeroPay or CanPay. Delivery is free on Rockland orders of $50 or more and free over $99 from White Plains and Queens. Have your ID ready at the door; the person who ordered must receive the bag.
  2. Pickup. Order online, choose pickup, and collect at the register. Orders are usually ready in about 20 minutes on a normal day; allow longer on Wednesday afternoon.
  3. Curbside. Order and prepay online, pull up, and staff bring the order to your car. The fastest option when the lot is full.
  4. In store. Walk in and shop with a budtender. Expect a line in the late afternoon and early evening. Our guide to what a budtender does is a useful read for first-timers in the family.

Two practical notes. First, menus are live inventory: if you see something you want on Monday, order it Monday, because the same item may be gone by Wednesday night. Second, holiday hours can differ from regular hours. Check the store page for Rockland, White Plains, or Queens before you drive over on Wednesday night or Thanksgiving Day.

New York rules to keep in mind over Thanksgiving weekend

A busy shopping day is a good time to restate the basics, especially with relatives visiting from states where the rules differ:

  • Possession limit. Adults 21+ may carry up to 3 ounces of flower or 24 grams of concentrate in public. Details in our New York cannabis laws for 2026 guide.
  • Sharing with guests. Giving cannabis to another adult 21 or older, within the possession limit and without payment, is legal in New York. Selling it, or giving it to anyone under 21, is not. See is it legal to gift cannabis in New York.
  • Where you can use it. Generally wherever tobacco smoking is allowed, with exceptions such as cars, schools, and workplaces. A private home is the host’s call.
  • Crossing state lines. Cannabis bought in New York must stay in New York. Do not pack it for the drive to New Jersey, Connecticut, or Pennsylvania, even where cannabis is also legal.
  • Driving. Driving while impaired by cannabis is illegal in New York. Build the delivery or a sober driver into the plan.

Green Wednesday is, at heart, a convenience story: one afternoon when a lot of adults make the same stop on the way to the same holiday. Order from a licensed New York dispensary, order early, and the day takes care of itself. If you are shopping for December as well, our holiday cannabis shopping guide picks up where this one leaves off.

Frequently asked questions

What is Green Wednesday?

Green Wednesday is the cannabis industry's name for the day before Thanksgiving. It is consistently one of the two busiest legal cannabis shopping days of the year, trailing only April 20. In 2026 it falls on Wednesday, November 25.

Is Green Wednesday a real holiday?

No. It is a retail nickname, like Black Friday or Cyber Monday, that emerged in early adult-use states once dispensaries noticed the Thanksgiving-eve sales spike. Analytics firms such as Headset now track it every year.

Why is Green Wednesday so busy for dispensaries?

It is the last convenient shopping window before a four-day holiday weekend. People shop before traveling or once they arrive in town, hosts pick up shareable formats for adult guests, and Thanksgiving Day itself is one of the slowest sales days of the year, so the weekend's shopping compresses into Wednesday.

Do New York dispensaries have Green Wednesday deals?

Licensed New York dispensaries may run promotions and loyalty programs under the Office of Cannabis Management's December 2025 marketing rules, so Thanksgiving-week specials are now common. Cannabis Realm of NY posts current offers on its deals page; they apply automatically on each store's menu and vary by location.

Can I get cannabis delivered on Green Wednesday in New York?

Yes. Cannabis Realm of NY offers same-day delivery from Rockland, White Plains, and Queens on the day before Thanksgiving. Delivery is free on Rockland orders of $50 or more and over $99 elsewhere. The person who placed the order must be 21 or older and show a valid government-issued ID at the door.

Should I order on Green Wednesday or earlier in the week?

Earlier. Menus are live inventory and popular items sell out by Wednesday evening, and delivery windows fill fastest on Wednesday afternoon. Ordering Monday or Tuesday gives you the widest selection and the easiest delivery slot; pickup and curbside are the quickest options if you do wait until Wednesday.

Is the dispensary open on Thanksgiving Day?

Holiday hours can differ from regular hours and vary by store. Check the Rockland, White Plains, or Queens store page before heading over on Thanksgiving Day, and order on Wednesday if you need something for Thursday.

What sells the most on Green Wednesday?

Shareable, portable formats. Headset's 2023 data showed edibles and beverages growing fastest on the day while concentrates declined. Pre-roll multipacks and vape products also move quickly because they travel well and need no extra hardware.
